Halloween
My Cool School Project is all about Halloween.
Halloween has been celebrated for a long, long time. Even before I was born. “Trick or treat, kids.” But I’ve been trick or treating for as long as I can remember. That’s at least seven years, so I’m pretty much an expert.
The first reason Halloween is awesome is you have to dress up. Kids dress up, grownups dress up, babies dress up, even your dog can dress up. You can be a witch, or a ghost, or a skeleton and be scary. Or you may be a prince or a princess and wear a crown. You can be big and strong like a superhero or a dinosaur, or you can be funny like a clown, or scary like a clown. I don’t like clowns. “What did I do?”
When you are dressed up, you are ready to go treat-or-treating. Number one reason this is awesome? Candy! Various buckets, and bags and never any candy? You just tell people to give you candy and they do! Personally, I think it’s nicer to ask. You knock on the door and yell “Trick-or-treat!”, and then they say “Oh, you’re so cute”, and then they give you candy. My little brother says: “trick-or-treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat”, which is amazing, because people laugh. Instead of saying “what a horrible child” and closing the door. My brother is just joking when he says that. But his feet are so stinky that people can’t help but smell them. Pyow!
Speaking of brothers, once you get home it’s absolutely necessary that you hide your Halloween candy in the best hiding spot ever. If you don’t, he’ll find your stash and gobble up all your best treats. Usually I have two bags – the small one that I share and the big one that is all for me.
Okay, that’s for the food stuff. You might also get to the Halloween carnival. You can eat caramel apples or red candy apples or buffalo apples or bob for apples*. “Hey, I’m Bob and I love apples!” No, not gunning (?) Bob who loves apples. Yeah, that’s what I meant. You can see all kinds of pumpkins at a carnival. From teensy tiny itty-bitty ones, to great big giant ones. Sometimes people even wear pumpkins on their heads like in the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow”**. And my personal favourite pumpkin is “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”***.
You can dance to the monster mash. Or go to a haunted house. Okay, it’s not really haunted. Usually it’s just some older kids dressed up in costumes.
So let’s recap. Halloween means you get to have the most fun ever just being in an awesome costume and even make it on a free candy. And that is why Halloween is the best day ever.
Don’t go anywhere, our awesome Halloween videos are starting right now!

*Bobbing for apples:
also known as apple bobbing, is a game often played on Halloween. The game is played by filling a tub or a large basin with water and putting apples in the water. Because apples are less dense than water, they will float at the surface. Players (usually children) then try to catch one with their teeth. Use of arms is not allowed, and often are tied behind the back to prevent cheating.)
** “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” a short story by American writer Washington Irwing very popular during the Helloween season
*** “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” a 1960-s cartoon special about Helloween

3) Origins of Trick or Treat

Из приведенного ниже текста ты узнаешь об одной из версий возникновения традиции праздновать Хеллоуин.

There are many stories as to the way trick-or-treating might have begun :
Fooling the Spirits
Many people believed long ago that ghosts walked the earth on Halloween. They believed that fairies and ghouls played tricks on people. The way they fooled the spirits was to put on costumes.
One Halloween a group of young people called on a neighbor. When she came to the door she got a fright. She did not know that the “spirits” at the door were some of the young people of the village. She thought that the spirits had come to fool her.
She decided to prevent them from tricking her to give them food and money so they would leave. They were surprised by the gifts and thanked the neighbor. Going onto the next house where the some thing happened! They had so much fun that they decided to do this every Halloween!
Soul caking
People wanted to welcome the friendly spirits so they baked special soul cakes for them. When children came dressed in their costumes on All Hallow’s Eve, they were given soul cakes.

4) Trick or Treat Rhymes

These are the rhymes that children usually say when they go to their neighbours and ask for candies on Halloween.
Это стишки, которые читают дети, чтобы выпросить у взрослых конфеты, обещая напугать их, если они этого не сделают

Trick or treat, smell my feet,
Give me something good to eat,
Not too big, not to small,
Just the size of Montreal!

Or:
Deal out, Deal out,
The witches are out!

Or:
Trick or treat, you’re so neat.
Give me something good to eat.
Nuts and candy, fruit and gum.
I’ll go away if you give me some.

When ghost and goblins come to town,
and the skeletons all dance around,
Just pull these covers over your head,

Watch Out!

Skeleton Parade

The skeletons are out tonight.
They march about the street this night,
With bony bodies, bony heads and hands and feet
Bony, bony, bony bones,
With nothing in between,
up, down and all around,
They march on Halloween,
All throughout the town!
